Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has sharply criticised Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, urging her to demonstrate confidence in the small-scale businesses she recently recommended by establishing them for members of her own family and All Progressives Congress (APC) women leaders.
Effiong made the remarks on Saturday via a post on X (formerly Twitter), responding to the First Lady’s comments encouraging Nigerian sparticularly women to venture into ventures like selling akara (bean cakes), roasted corn, and kuli-kuli (peanut snacks).
These suggestions came as part of the Renewed Hope Initiative’s grant programme.“Senator Remi Tinubu should first set up Corn, Akara and Kuli Kuli business for some members of her family and the APC women leaders,” Effiong wrote.
“It will encourage other Nigerians to venture into the same business. Since she believes that with such ventures, one can make enough money to feed, pay house rent, pay school fees and solve other basic needs.”
The lawyer went further, launching a broader attack on the Tinubu administration and the First Couple, accusing them of poor leadership and greed.
“A family where the husband and wife are wicked and greedy shouldn’t be allowed close to the presidency of a country. Bola Tinubu and Remi Tinubu are very vicious and extremely dangerous,” he stated.
“The unborn generation of Nigerians will not forgive the present generation for allowing wicked people to hold this country down.”
The First Lady’s original remarks sparked widespread debate and criticism online, with many Nigerians arguing that such businesses are unrealistic amid high inflation, soaring food prices, and economic hardship.
Supporters, however, have defended the advice, noting that petty trading with small capital and grants can be viable and that many families have succeeded with similar enterprises in the past.
Effiong’s response reflects ongoing public frustration with the government’s economic policies and the perceived disconnect between leaders’ suggestions and the daily realities faced by ordinary citizens.
