The Marine Police Unit of the Lagos State Command has rescued a 23-year-old man, Joshua Babalola, who attempted to end his life by jumping into the Lagos lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge.
The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. on June 8, 2026, when officers received reports that a young man had plunged into the water. Marine police operatives, with the help of local fishermen, swiftly mobilized to the scene and pulled him out alive.
Babalola, a painter from Ibadan, Oyo State, told authorities he had traveled to Lagos that morning without informing anyone.
He explained that financial struggles and feelings of hopelessness pushed him to the act, adding that his mobile phone was lost in the lagoon.
Police spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the rescue, noting that Babalola had been stabilized and was under police care while efforts were ongoing to contact his family.“He was rescued with the help of fishermen in the area.
He is the second person in three months to be rescued from the lagoon,” Adebisi said. The command urged residents, fishermen, and community leaders to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities, stressing that effective policing depends on collaboration between the public and security agencies.
Authorities reiterated their commitment to safeguarding lives and property across Lagos State while encouraging citizens to stay alert and support emergency response efforts.
