Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested a social media activist, Akaninyene Udo, for allegedly spreading false and provocative security alerts online that triggered panic among residents.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, police said the suspect, who operates under the handle “AK Philo” on social media and resides in Akpautong, Esit Eket Local Government Area, was picked up after investigations into a viral post.
The post, titled “Eket get ready for us,” featured an image of an armed bandit and circulated widely, causing fear and concern in Eket and surrounding areas.
The police emphasised that the state remains calm and secure, with no credible threats. Security agencies continue to maintain vigilance to protect lives and property.
“The Command has observed with concern the activities of certain individuals who use social media platforms to circulate false, misleading and provocative security-related messages aimed at creating fear, panic and unnecessary apprehension among residents,” the statement read.
Police have concluded investigations and plan to charge the suspect in court soon. Efforts are also underway to apprehend any accomplices involved in spreading the content.
Authorities warned the public against creating, publishing, or sharing unverified security alerts, fake news, or misleading information, noting that such actions are criminal offences that will lead to arrest and prosecution.
Residents were advised to always verify security information through official police channels or credible sources before sharing. The Command urged calm and encouraged prompt reporting of genuine concerns to the nearest police station or emergency lines.
