Party Primaries: After 25 Years of Democracy, Nigerian Politicians Still Learning – Shehu

Public affairs commentator, Mahdi Shehu, has expressed concern over the level of political desperation and poor conduct displayed by Nigerian politicians during the just-concluded party primaries.

In a post shared on X on Saturday, Shehu criticised political parties for what he described as a lack of transparency and the rising tensions generated by the exercise. He noted that although the primaries have ended, many parties are yet to release their final lists of candidates, a development he described as suspicious.

“All parties’ primary elections are over, yet the final lists are being withheld and treated as if they are in a casino room,” he said.Shehu observed that the disputes, rejections, and reactions trailing the primaries indicate that many politicians are still struggling with basic democratic processes.

“Even after 25 uninterrupted years of democratic governance, politicians in Nigeria are still learning the ropes,” he added. The commentator also highlighted the growing desperation for political power, saying some politicians are ready to switch parties or form strange alliances just to secure tickets.

“Extreme desperation for power at all cost is increasing, judging by the behaviour of party members after losing tickets,” he said.He pointed out that politicians who once heavily criticised certain parties are now defecting to them in search of electoral opportunities.

“Some characters are moving from one political party to another looking for cheap tickets, including parties they once demonised,” Shehu stated. He further described the situation as one where former political rivals are now forming convenient alliances, calling them “strange bedfellows” driven purely by the thirst for power.

Shehu warned that democracy is under threat due to this dangerous level of desperation and cautioned that the full consequences of these developments will become evident before, during, and after the general elections.“The realities will manifest before, during and after the general elections,” he said.
