The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu, has deployed senior officers, including Deputy Inspectors-General (DIGs), to intensify rescue operations for schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oyo State.
Disu announced the measures during a meeting with top police officers in Abuja on Tuesday.
He also directed a nationwide crackdown on vehicles operating with concealed, altered, defaced, or missing number plates, which are frequently used by criminals.
“The families and the citizens of Nigeria can rely on the full operational capacity of the force, in collaboration with other security agencies, dedicated to ensuring their safe return,” the IGP stated.
“We are making headway and will not cease our efforts until all hostages are safely home.”
Starting from June 15, DIGs will be dispatched across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones to strengthen supervision, coordination, and accountability in police operations.
The police chief further ordered commissioners in neighbouring states to implement “handshake patrols” along major routes to improve intelligence sharing and close security gaps exploited by criminals.
Disu mandated immediate enforcement against vehicles without registration plates or those with deliberately obscured, concealed, or tampered numbers. Such vehicles will be stopped, impounded, and prosecuted.
He noted that unregistered and unmarked vehicles are commonly used by kidnappers, terrorists, and other criminal elements to evade detection. “There will be no preferential treatment for violators,” he warned.
The measures come amid heightened concerns over the recent abduction of students and teachers in Oyo State, part of a broader pattern of school kidnappings and banditry across parts of Nigeria.
The police highlighted recent successes, including the rescue of 88 kidnapped victims and arrests of several suspects.
