Outrage in Benue as Soldiers Allegedly Assault Youth Volunteers

Residents of Apa Local Government Area, Benue State, have expressed anger following allegations that soldiers assaulted and disarmed youth volunteers mobilised to boost community security amid persistent attacks by suspected armed herders.

The incident reportedly occurred in Adija community, days after three farmers were killed in Ikobi, one of several communities plagued by repeated violence.

Local sources said volunteers from Ologo and Asaba villages had gathered to discuss security measures but were intercepted by soldiers while returning home.

During the encounter, vigilante commander Olowo Otache and his younger brother were allegedly beaten, sustaining injuries that required treatment at General Hospital, Ugbokpo.

The incident sparked protests, with youths blocking the Otukpo–Oweto Federal Highway to demand stronger security and protection for vulnerable communities.

Residents claimed soldiers confiscated locally made firearms from volunteers, raising fears that the move could weaken community-led security efforts. Some locals noted that volunteers had previously worked with police to support safety initiatives.

Community leaders highlighted worsening insecurity along the Apa–Agatu corridor, where attacks have displaced residents and destroyed livelihoods.

They accused security agencies of delayed responses despite prior warnings of impending assaults.

The development has intensified calls for the Federal Government, security agencies, and the Benue State Government to investigate the allegations, strengthen protective measures, and restore public confidence in security operations.

As of press time, the Nigerian military had not issued an official statement on the matter.
