The Osun State Government has declared Wednesday, June 17, 2026, a public holiday across the state to commemorate the Islamic New Year, Hijira 1448AH.
The announcement was made in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Rasheed Aderibigbe, and released in Osogbo on Tuesday.
Aderibigbe explained that the holiday marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year. “Osun State Government is pleased to announce that Wednesday 17th June, 2026 will be observed as a Public Holiday to commemorate Hijira 1448AH,” the statement read.
The Commissioner extended warm greetings to Muslim residents on behalf of the state government. “May this occasion bring peace, prosperity and unity to our great State,” he added.
The government urged residents to shun rancour and disharmony, and to participate joyfully in the festivities while promoting unity and togetherness.
The Islamic year 1448 AH began on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, following the sighting of the Muharram crescent moon.
