Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has warned that Nigeria is facing existential threats from insecurity, hunger, and corruption, insisting that leaders must treat these crises as a national emergency rather than focus on political maneuvering.
Obi lamented the worsening state of affairs, noting that Nigerians including children and security personnel are being abducted, highways have become unsafe, millions are unsure of their next meal, and billions of naira are allegedly siphoned through phantom agencies and projects.
“When citizens cannot travel safely, when hunger is widespread, and when public funds are diverted frivolously, should politics really be our primary preoccupation?” he asked.
He argued that responsible leadership should urgently mobilize institutions, security agencies, experts, and community leaders to confront these challenges with resolve.
Obi further called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to publish the academic certificates and credentials submitted by candidates seeking elective office.
He stressed that transparency in the electoral process would strengthen democracy and build public trust.
“Why shouldn’t INEC, in the interest of ensuring that our leaders are exemplary in following the rules, publish the academic certificates and credentials submitted by every candidate?” he said.
According to him, Nigeria’s survival, security, and stability must take precedence over partisan advantage, adding that the country needs leadership defined by competence, character, capacity, compassion, and commitment to service.
His remarks come as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with parties and aspirants outlining positions on governance, reforms, and leadership standards.
