NUT Declares Indefinite Strike in Oyo Over Abducted Teachers, children

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has declared an indefinite strike across all public primary and secondary schools in Oyo State, demanding the immediate and safe rescue of abducted teachers and students.

In a circular dated May 29, 2026, and signed by NUT National President Audu Amba and Secretary General Clinton Ikpitibo, the union directed teachers to withdraw their services starting Monday, June 1, 2026, until the victims are released.

The union also directed all state wings nationwide to hold solidarity rallies on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, which will terminate at various Government Houses.

The strike follows the abduction of about 39 students and seven teachers on May 15, 2026, by suspected bandits in Oriire Local Government Area of Ogbomoso.

The attackers killed an assistant headmaster and a motorcyclist during the raid. One of the abducted teachers, Michael Oyedokun, was later beheaded by the kidnappers.

In two videos posted on Instagram on Friday, the principal of Community High School, Esinele, Rachael Alamu, who was also abducted, pleaded with the government to urgently negotiate their release, warning that the kidnappers were threatening to kill another victim.

The Oyo State wing of the NUT, in a statement signed by its Secretary, Salami Olukayode, confirmed full compliance with the national directive.

The union said the prolonged detention of the victims has created fear and anxiety in the education sector.

The NUT expressed solidarity with the families of the abducted victims and the slain teachers, while urging its members to remain law-abiding during the strike.

The development comes as Governor Seyi Makinde visited the affected communities on Saturday, while a federal delegation led by Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu visited Ogbomoso on Sunday.

President Bola Tinubu has directed the deployment of a specialised security unit with advanced rescue capabilities to secure the release of the hostages.

The union said it remains committed to pursuing every lawful means to ensure the safe return of the abducted teachers and learners.
