Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has said that Nigerian citizens are paying more for services that are not rendered to them.
Falana made this remark on Friday when he featured in an
interview on ‘Politics Today’, a programme on Channels Television.
The senior lawyer was speaking on the state of power supply
in the country, accusing electricity companies of planning to increase their
tariffs again.
“Nigerians are paying more for services not rendered to the
Nigerian people. But we have got to the stage now where we have to ask
questions.
“Somebody sold 18 electricity companies, according to a
former minister under the Jonathan administration.
“Now the government has been giving again a lot of trillions
of naira to the electricity companies, at the end of the day, you hear of band
A, band B, and the rest of them were paying more for services that are not
rendered to the Nigerian people.
“But we have got to the state now where we have to ask
questions, the electricity companies are planning to increase their tariffs
again.
“This time around, you will have to justify, because under
the law, under the Electricity Act, you can only increase your tariff if there
is improvement in services,” he said.
