Nigerians Enable Election Rigging by Failing to Defend Votes - Peter Obi

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has argued that elections in Nigeria are often manipulated because citizens fail to safeguard their votes and actively defend the electoral process.

Obi made the remarks during a recent visit to Washington, D.C..

He emphasized that politicians alone cannot guarantee credible elections unless voters take responsibility for protecting the sanctity of their ballots.

“Elections are rigged in Nigeria because Nigerians want it to be rigged. It’s as simple as ABC. I will do whatever is possible to protect the votes, but unless Nigerians decide that their votes will count, it will not count,” Obi said.

He urged citizens to remain at polling units after casting their ballots and monitor the counting process instead of leaving immediately.

According to him, many Nigerians mistakenly rely on prayers rather than civic action, abandoning polling stations while results are being manipulated.

Obi stressed that Nigeria’s greatest challenge is poor leadership, not a lack of resources. He maintained that the country is richly endowed with human and natural assets but continues to lag due to weak political leadership.

“The question you all should ask yourselves today is: what is the problem of Nigeria? Nigeria has only one problem, leadership. Political leadership. Every other thing God gave to Nigeria,” he added.

He called on Nigerians, both at home and in the diaspora, to insist on accountable leadership and to play an active role in protecting their votes, noting that meaningful change will only come when citizens demand it.
