The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano State has strongly countered recent comments by Governor Abba Yusuf, who suggested the party’s absence from the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency bye-election signaled weakness ahead of the 2027 polls.
Governor Yusuf, through his spokesperson Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, had claimed that NDC’s decision not to field a candidate was proof that the All Progressives Congress (APC) would dominate in 2027.
Responding, NDC Kano Chairman Hussaini Isa Mai Riga dismissed the governor’s remarks as political posturing.
He stressed that the party is focused on building a people-centred structure across all 44 local government areas of Kano State.“NDC is a party of strategy and discipline. Skipping one bye-election does not mean we are weak. It means we are focused on the bigger picture,” Mai Riga said in a statement issued by his media aide, Adam Said Adam.
He explained that the party is prioritizing grassroots mobilisation, political education, and policy development to tackle unemployment, insecurity, and economic hardship.
According to him, contesting every bye-election would waste resources and distract from long-term goals.
Mai Riga expressed confidence that with the backing of Kano residents and the influence of the Kwankwasiyya movement, NDC will be well-positioned to win the next governorship election.
He urged members to remain calm, avoid provocation, and continue lawful political engagement, while calling on security agencies to ensure neutrality and fairness.
The NDC Kano chapter reaffirmed its commitment to democratic values, issue-based politics, and good governance as preparations for 2027 intensify.
