The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has publicly distanced itself from the Take It Back (TIB) Movement led by activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, accusing the group of pursuing partisan political interests under the guise of activism.
In a statement issued in Abuja, NANS President, Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, said the association would not participate in protests organized by the movement, stressing that its advocacy approach differs significantly.
He alleged that the TIB Movement has blurred the lines between activism, journalism, and politics, raising doubts about its true objectives.
Akinteye dismissed reports questioning his student status, affirming that he remains a bonafide student of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology.
He criticized the publication behind the claims for failing to verify facts, urging media outlets to uphold professionalism and accuracy.
The NANS president further claimed that the TIB Movement is increasingly perceived as a political platform, with some linking it to groups such as the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN), though he provided no evidence.
On the recent abduction of students and teachers in parts of Nigeria, Akinteye stated that NANS would not collaborate with Sowore or the TIB Movement in any protest.
Instead, he commended organized labour and education stakeholders, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), for their advocacy on behalf of victims.
He reiterated NANS’ commitment to demanding the safe return of abducted students and holding authorities accountable for protecting schools.
According to him, the association will continue to champion student interests through peaceful and lawful means, rejecting any actions that could incite violence or public disorder.
