Julius Abure, factional national chairman of the Labour Party (LP), says the party experienced its most significant growth under his leadership.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday,
Abure rejected allegations that he was working with the ruling All Progressives
Congress (APC) to weaken the Labour Party, adding that his support for Peter
Obi’s presidential ambition contradicted such claims.
Abure said his leadership played a central role in
transforming the Labour Party from a fringe political platform into a major
force in national politics.
“The party rose in my time. I gave free tickets to people,
looked for credible Nigerians to run on the platform of the party,” he said.
“You will agree with me that the party became big in my
time. I promoted the party, spent my time, spent my energy, spent my resources,
gave people free tickets, and promoted them.”
Abure said he found it difficult to understand why some
beneficiaries of the party’s rise now sought to sideline the leadership that
helped elevate them.
“People who wouldn’t have won councillorship election, I
brought them to the party, promoted them, and they all became elected officers
in the party,” he said.
“As soon as we elevated the party, people who came to run
under the party felt that we were no longer qualified to be members of the
National Working Committee.”
Abure also defended his relationship with Obi, noting that
his faction had already endorsed the former Anambra governor as the party’s
sole presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
“People see us as villains in the Labour Party, but we gave
Obi the 2027 presidential ticket of the Labour Party,” he said.
According to him, disagreements within political parties are
common and could have been resolved internally, but the situation worsened
after the formation of the Nenadi Usman-led caretaker committee in Umuahia.
The Labour Party has remained divided since Usman was
appointed chairperson of a caretaker committee in September 2024.
The committee was subsequently recognised by INEC and backed
by court rulings, including a court of appeal judgment that dismissed Abure’s
bid to overturn his removal as national chairman.
