The Kaduna State Government has commenced the disbursement of N100,000 to each of 97 former inmates recently granted clemency by Governor Uba Sani, as part of efforts to support their smooth reintegration into society and reduce recidivism.
The payments were made on Friday at the Kaduna Medium Security Custodial Centre, fulfilling the governor’s earlier pledge to the beneficiaries who were released on June 12 to mark Democracy Day.
The inmates were freed under the governor’s constitutional prerogative of mercy. The state government also settled fines imposed on some of them to enable their release.
Assistant Controller of the custodial centre, Dalhat Ibrahim, welcomed the financial intervention, describing it as a significant boost to rehabilitation efforts.
“By paying the fine of the inmates and giving them financial assistance, this will encourage them to go and do what they are supposed to do. They are now set to be reintegrated into society,” he said.
Ibrahim urged the beneficiaries to use the money as startup capital for legitimate businesses rather than returning to crime, noting that the gesture aligns with the correctional service’s mandate of reformation, rehabilitation, and reintegration.
Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Protocol, Mohammed Suleiman, said the disbursement represented the final phase of the clemency programme.
“We are fulfilling the Governor’s promise by extending financial support of N100,000 each to the freed inmates,” Suleiman stated.
He advised the beneficiaries to remain law-abiding and steer clear of any criminal activities that could lead to re-incarceration.
One of the beneficiaries, Chuks Solomon from Ebonyi State, expressed gratitude to Governor Sani, saying the support would enable many of them to start small businesses and rebuild their lives.
Another beneficiary, Abubakar Umar, described the gesture as a source of renewed hope. The initiative is part of Kaduna State’s broader criminal justice reform strategy aimed at decongesting custodial facilities, promoting restorative justice, and facilitating the successful reintegration of ex-offenders.
