In a swift political U-turn, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has rejoined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), barely one week after resigning from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Iyabo initially defected from the PDP to the APC in January 2026, citing betrayal by the PDP leadership, which she accused of only reaching out to prominent members like herself during election periods.
She described the party as “idiots” for neglecting key stakeholders and declared her intention to contest the Ogun State governorship election under the APC banner. Her move marked a return to active politics after a 15-year hiatus.
However, her stay in the APC was short-lived. Last Monday, she announced her resignation from the party after losing the governorship ticket, claiming she was disrespected, rejected, and maltreated by the Ogun State APC leadership.
On Monday, Iyabo made a surprise appearance at the official unveiling of the PDP’s deputy governorship candidate, Lateefah Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo, at the party secretariat in Abeokuta.
Her arrival triggered wild excitement among party members, who gave her a rousing welcome with chants and solidarity songs.
Addressing supporters briefly at the event, she assured the people of Ogun State that the era of “stealing the mandate” of the PDP governorship candidate, Oladipupo Adebutu, was over. She also hinted at her official defection to the party in the coming days.
In a related development, the PDP has named Iyabo Obasanjo as its candidate for the Ogun Central Senatorial District in the upcoming elections.
This rapid return to her former party underscores the fluid and often unpredictable nature of Nigerian politics, especially ahead of the 2027 general elections.
