Insecurity: Centre Faults Reps Minority Leader’s Call to Suspend Election Activities

The Parliamentary Advocacy Centre (PAC) has criticised the House of Representatives Minority Leader, Fred Agbedi, for urging President Bola Tinubu to suspend all 2027 election-related activities in order to focus on tackling Nigeria’s worsening insecurity and economic challenges.

Agbedi had last week called on the President to prioritise the welfare and security of Nigerians over what he described as premature political calculations ahead of the next general elections.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by its President, Itodo Vincent, the PAC described Agbedi’s remarks as politically motivated, unhelpful, and an attempt to politicise a sensitive national issue.

“It is unfortunate that Hon. Fred Agbedi chose to politicise an issue as sensitive as national security. Nigerians expect practical solutions and constructive engagement from political leaders, not statements designed to score partisan points,” the statement said.

The group acknowledged the severity of the country’s security challenges including banditry, kidnapping, insurgency, and communal clashes but stressed that these problems predate the current administration and require collective efforts from all stakeholders rather than partisan posturing.

PAC described Agbedi’s suggestion that the President should suspend election activities and even resign if security is not improved within six months as “reckless and unbecoming of a statesman.”

The organisation argued that such comments appear aimed more at advancing opposition interests ahead of 2027 than at genuinely resolving the security crisis.

“Security is a collective responsibility and should not be reduced to a platform for political posturing. What Nigerians need at this moment are ideas, cooperation and support for ongoing efforts to improve security and economic stability, not inflammatory comments,” the statement added.

The centre urged political leaders across party lines to offer constructive ideas, strengthen institutions, and place national interest above partisan considerations.
