The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially declared Olaka Nwogu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the Rivers South-East Senatorial District by-election held on Saturday, June 20, 2026.
Nwogu secured a decisive victory with 46,961 votes, far ahead of his closest contender, Osarokaka Ebenezer Erewari of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who polled just 1,647 votes.
Other candidates recorded significantly lower numbers: Action Alliance’s Douglass Fabeke got 1,175 votes, while the Labour Party’s Sam Kinani received 367 votes.
INEC Returning Officer, Professor Rosemary Ogu, announced the results at the collation centre in Bori, Khana Local Government Area, confirming that Nwogu met all legal requirements and was duly elected to represent the district.
The by-election was held across seven local government areas, Khana, Gokana, Tai, Eleme, Andoni, Oyigbo, and Opobo to fill the vacancy created by the death of former Senator Barry Mpigi in February 2026. Only four parties were cleared to participate.
Meanwhile, INEC officials noted some technical glitches with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) during the exercise but said backup machines were deployed promptly to affected areas, ensuring the process continued smoothly overall.
Olaka Nwogu, widely regarded as an ally of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, now takes up the senatorial seat for the Rivers South-East District.
