Armed bandits riding about 40 motorcycles stormed Iluke community in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State on Wednesday, targeting Government Secondary School and nearby residents.
According to a statement by the Kogi State Police Command spokesperson, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, the attackers were suspected to have planned mass abductions of students and community members.
Security forces, including police tactical teams, military personnel, and local vigilantes, responded swiftly and engaged the bandits in a fierce gun battle.
The attackers were forced to retreat into surrounding bushes.“Preliminary findings indicate that there is presently no conclusive evidence of a successful mass abduction of students or other residents,” the police said.
Despite repelling the attack, three people were killed: Mr. Ganiyu Anifowose, Vice Principal of UBE Secondary/Primary School Iluke; Mr. Sunday Jacob Alhassan, aged 70; and six-year-old Sunday Ayele.
One suspected bandit was also killed, while a security operative sustained gunshot injuries and is receiving treatment.
The Commissioner of Police has ordered sustained bush-combing operations and patrols across affected communities.
Authorities urged residents to remain calm and provide credible information to aid ongoing efforts to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
This rewrite emphasizes the dramatic scale of the attack, the coordinated security response, and the tragic loss of lives, while keeping the narrative concise and impactful.
