Seriake Dickson, senator representing Bayelsa West and national leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), says no politician is more qualified than him to contest for Nigeria’s presidency.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme, Dickson said he deliberately chose not to run despite his vast experience and credentials.
He was responding to suggestions that Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso had elevated the NDC by joining the party.
“I could have run. There’s no one more qualified than me to run for presidential candidate. None,” Dickson said.
The former Bayelsa governor stressed that the NDC’s relevance does not depend on any single individual. He argued that the party’s founding members and leadership had already built a credible platform for Nigerians seeking political change.
“It should not be made to look like anyone is doing the NDC a favour. Rather, the NDC, my colleagues, and I are the ones offering people a platform,” he said.
Dickson cautioned that support for individuals must not come at the expense of respect for party structures and leadership. He criticised supporters who endorse figures like Obi while disparaging the NDC itself.
“You cannot claim to support Peter Obi while at the same time disparaging me, the leadership, or the platform itself. Respect for the platform and its leadership is essential,” he said.
He added that before Obi and Kwankwaso joined, the NDC had already attracted politicians nationwide, citing defections from Zamfara, Adamawa, and other states.
Dickson warned that the Obidient and Kwankwasiyya movements risk undermining the party’s presidential ticket if they “run down” the NDC.
