The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called on the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to grant immediate access to medical care for former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, who is currently in the commission’s custody.
In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, and released on Thursday, June 11, 2026, MURIC expressed concern over reports of the former governor’s deteriorating health condition.
The group warned that denying a detainee access to medical care constitutes a gross violation of fundamental human rights as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.
“We remind ICPC that denial of access to medical care to a detainee is a gross violation of Section 34(1)(a)(b)&(c) and Section 33(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which stipulates, ‘Every individual is entitled to respect for the dignity of his person, and accordingly… (b) no person shall be held in slavery or servitude,’” the statement read.
MURIC demanded immediate medical attention for El-Rufai and frowned upon any form of violation of his fundamental human rights while in custody.
El-Rufai has been in ICPC custody for several days over alleged corruption-related matters. His media aide had earlier raised the alarm that the former governor was suffering from a worsening eye condition, including swollen, reddish, and itchy eyes, but was allegedly denied proper medical attention.
