Isyaka Rabe, one of the sons of the late retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, has strongly disputed the Katsina State Government’s assertion that his father suffered from diabetes and died from related complications while in bandits’ captivity.
In an interview with Deutsche Welle (DW) on Sunday, Isyaka described reports linking his father’s death to diabetes as inaccurate, insisting the late general had no history of the condition or high blood pressure.
“My father never had diabetes,” he emphasised. While acknowledging that only God knows the exact cause of death, Isyaka suggested a heart attack as a more likely possibility.
He noted that his father’s legs were restrained and referenced speculation from a video allegedly released by the kidnappers about a possible snake bite.
The retired general was abducted on May 30, 2026, along with his wife and driver while heading to a wedding in Matazu area of Katsina State.
He reportedly died in captivity, and his body was later handed over to the family. The Katsina State Government had announced that he died from complications of diabetes and hypertension.
Isyaka said he has no information on how the body was recovered and directed questions about the circumstances to the government.
He described his father as dying a hero and revealed that his mother, who was abducted alongside him, is still being held by the kidnappers, dismissing social media reports claiming she had been released.
The death of the former Director of Defence Information has sparked widespread outrage and calls for stronger action against banditry in the region.
