Former Kano State Deputy Governor and 2023 APC governorship candidate, Dr Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, is in advanced talks to defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), seeking the party’s governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 elections.
Sources revealed that negotiations between Gawuna’s camp and ADC leaders in Kano have reached a critical stage, with a final meeting scheduled to conclude the arrangement.
ADC state chairman, Musa Ungogo, confirmed the discussions, clarifying that contrary to social media claims, it was Gawuna who initiated contact.
“The story being circulated that the ADC approached Gawuna is not correct. It was Gawuna who approached us. He sent a delegation to meet us, and discussions have been ongoing since then,” Ungogo told The reporters.
According to Ungogo, Gawuna’s team, led by former Kumbotso LGA chairman, Alhaji Sagir Fanshekara, and Hon Kadawa requested the ADC governorship ticket and political accommodation for loyalists seeking state and National Assembly seats.
The delegation also proposed a consensus arrangement, asking other aspirants to step down for Gawuna, citing his political strength across several local government areas.
Ungogo noted that the ADC leadership has demanded a formal written submission of all requests before making a final decision.
Despite the progress, he stressed that no agreement has been finalized:“Consultations are still ongoing. Nothing has been concluded yet. We want a solution that will be acceptable to all stakeholders and beneficial to the party.”
This development comes just months after Gawuna resigned from the APC, briefly joined the ADC, then defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) alongside Rabiu Kwankwaso.
His latest move signals further realignment in Kano’s political landscape as parties position themselves for 2027.
