Ali Ndume, senator representing Borno south, says the fresh abduction of students writing the National Examinations Council (NECO) examination in Borno shows the federal government must do more to tackle insecurity across the country.
Gunmen attacked Government Day Secondary School in Lassa,
Askira/Uba LGA of Borno, on Monday while students were sitting for the senior
school certificate examination (SSCE) organised by NECO.
The attack led to the abduction of students and teachers
before troops of Operation Hadin Kai launched a rescue operation.
The military said they have rescued 10 students and are
currently working to rescue the remaining one.
Reacting to the attack in a statement on Monday, Ndume
described the incident as disconcerting and urged the federal and Borno state
governments to intensify efforts to combat insurgency and banditry.
“This fresh abduction is disconcerting, coming at a time
when we don’t know the fate of children of Mussa who were kidnapped last
month,” the lawmaker said.
Ndume appealed to security agencies to redouble efforts to
rescue students abducted in recent attacks across the state.
“I want to appeal to security forces to redouble their
efforts and ensure the safe return of the 42 students of Mussa Primary and
Junior Secondary School, those kidnapped in Ngoshe, those abducted along
Buratai-Biu Road and those abducted today,” he said.
He said the government must convince Nigerians that it is
matching its commitment to security with action.
“The way to disabuse the minds of Nigerians that the
terrorists are overwhelming the government and security personnel is to take
the battle to their hideouts and reassure Nigerians that they can conveniently
sleep with their two eyes closed,” he said.
Ndume commended security personnel who pursued the attackers
and secured the release of some victims but called for stronger collaboration
among security agencies.
He stated that stronger collaboration among security
agencies is essential to prevent further attacks and curb insurgency across the
country.
The latest attack comes weeks after suspected Boko Haram
terrorists abducted dozens of pupils from Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary
School in the same LGA.
Borno police command confirmed Monday’s attack, saying an
unspecified number of students remain missing while police, military personnel,
hunters and vigilantes are combing the area in search of the victims.
