Fire Guts Kano Market, Destroys Offices, Shops

A devastating fire outbreak on Thursday night razed several properties, including offices and shops, along Murtala Mohammed Way in the Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State.

The blaze, which started at a salvage yard popularly known as Takumbo Market near First City Monument Bank, quickly spread to adjoining structures and commercial buildings.

According to a statement issued on Friday by the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, firefighters received a distress call at about 10:54 p.m. from one of their personnel and promptly responded.

Upon arrival, operatives from the Service Headquarters and other metropolitan stations battled the flames, which had engulfed a one-storey building and an adjoining commercial area spanning roughly 300 by 200 feet.

Preliminary investigations pointed to an electrical spark as the cause of the fire. It destroyed large quantities of goods at the salvage yard before spreading further.

The upper floor of the Kanawa Building was badly hit, with two offices, two parlours, two toilets, and a kitchen completely destroyed. Two stores on the ground floor of TUSRAYS Nigeria Limited were also damaged.

Thankfully, no casualties were recorded in the incident. The Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, urged residents and business owners to prioritise safety by maintaining electrical installations and observing preventive measures.

He also called for prompt reporting of fire incidents to enable quick response by emergency teams.

This latest fire incident highlights the recurring risk of electrical faults and the need for stricter safety compliance in markets and commercial areas across the state.
