FG Secures Freedom of Six Citizens Held in Côte d’Ivoire Since October 2025

The Federal Government of Nigeria has successfully secured the release of six Nigerians who had been detained in Côte d’Ivoire for several months over alleged economic crimes.

According to a statement issued on Friday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, four of the detainees were freed on Monday, June 22, 2026, while the remaining two were released the following day.

The releases came after sustained diplomatic and consular efforts by the Nigerian Embassy in Abidjan, which maintained regular access to the detainees, monitored their welfare, and engaged with Ivorian authorities including the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Justice.

The Ministry praised Ambassador Nwabiola C. Ezenwa and embassy staff for their professionalism and tireless work that led to the positive outcome.

It also expressed appreciation to the Ivorian government for its cooperation, noting that strong bilateral relations helped resolve the matter.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria remains firmly committed to the protection of the rights, welfare and dignity of Nigerian citizens abroad,” the statement emphasised.

It reassured Nigerians overseas that their welfare is a top priority of the country’s foreign policy.

The Ministry advised Nigerians living or travelling abroad to always respect the laws of host countries and stay in touch with the nearest Nigerian diplomatic mission when needed.
