FG Launches One Million Tree Campaign at NDA to Fight Desertification, Climate Change

The Federal Government has inaugurated a one-million-tree-planting campaign at the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna, to tackle climate change, desertification, deforestation and biodiversity loss.

The initiative is a partnership between the Africa Finance Corporation, NDA and Fifth Chukker. It was launched Monday at the NDA Biodiversity Conservation Centre.

Representing the Minister of Environment, Kaduna Commissioner for Environment Abubakar Buba said Kaduna faces desertification in the north and deforestation in the south, both threatening water resources and farming.

“Kaduna stands at a critical ecological crossroads. To our North, desertification continues its relentless march, while to our South, deforestation has steadily eroded forest cover,” Buba said.

He noted the project would create a natural, self-sustaining forest, not a monoculture plantation, to boost biodiversity and carbon capture. Kaduna State had earlier supplied 10,000 seedlings to the NDA, all thriving.

AFC President Ismail Zubairu said the project was “a promise to this land, to the communities around it, and to future generations.” He added AFC will plant two trees for every one sponsored by staff, and the effort will include research, environmental education, green jobs and a seed bank.

NDA Commandant Maj-Gen Olatoye called environmental degradation a national security issue. “A nation cannot be secure if its land is barren, its water is scarce, and its air is compromised,” he said.
