The Federal Government, through the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), has stepped up measures to curb the spread of illegal arms across the country by strengthening collaboration with key stakeholders.
Director-General of the Centre, Johnson Kokumo, embarked on a three-day working visit to Maiduguri, Borno State, to reinforce partnerships and advance strategies against the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in the North-East.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ dinner attended by representatives of the Borno State Government and security agencies, Kokumo represented by Brig.-Gen. M. S. Adamu, Director of Administration and Finance emphasized that stronger cooperation among institutions would significantly reduce the circulation of illicit weapons and enhance national security.
He noted that the Centre is working closely with security agencies to recover illegal arms for destruction and has been empowered to prosecute individuals involved in the trade.
Established by an Act of the National Assembly in 2024, NCCSALW oversees efforts to address trafficking, unlawful possession, and misuse of small arms nationwide.
The North-East Zonal Centre, headquartered in Maiduguri, covers Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, and Yobe states. Governor Babagana Zulum, represented by his Special Adviser on Security Matters, Brig.-Gen. Ishak, commended the Centre’s work and pledged continued support.
Maj.-Gen. Abubakar Adamu (retd), North-East Zonal Director of NCCSALW, reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to accountability and lawful management of recovered weapons.
The engagement also drew participation from civil society leaders, NYSC officials, and representatives of DSS, NDLEA, Immigration, Customs, and Civil Defence Corps.
During the visit, Kokumo inspected the construction of the Centre’s permanent site, met with staff, paid a courtesy call on the Theatre Commander of Operation HADIN KAI, Maj.-Gen. A. E. Abubakar, and reviewed a proposed site for an armoury facility.
