The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State has accused Governor Biodun Oyebanji of deploying security agencies and state machinery to harass opposition members ahead of the June 20 governorship election.
At a press conference in Ado Ekiti on Sunday, PDP deputy governorship candidate Ayodeji Ogunsakin alleged that party members had been arrested, detained, and subjected to intimidation because of their political affiliations.
“The atmosphere being created is one of fear and intimidation. Democracy cannot thrive where citizens are afraid to identify with a political party or express their political opinions,” Ogunsakin said.
He claimed that police operatives had targeted PDP supporters in Ikere Ekiti and other areas, conducting overnight raids and detaining individuals for displaying campaign materials or openly supporting PDP candidates.
Ogunsakin urged President Bola Tinubu and security authorities to investigate the allegations and ensure a level playing field for all parties.
The PDP warned that continued harassment of opposition members could heighten political tension as the election approaches.
However, Ekiti State Commissioner for Information, Taiwo Olatunbosun, dismissed the allegations as “untrue and laughable,” insisting that Governor Oyebanji is a peace-loving leader not involved in arrests.
“When people violate the law, security agencies are there to do their job. The PDP should stop parading thugs as members and adhere strictly to the rule of law,” Olatunbosun said.
The commissioner maintained that the accusations were an attempt by the PDP to gain undue attention, stressing that the governor remains committed to peace and good governance in the state.
