Displaced Borno Indigenes Return Home After Years of Sojourn in Yobe

The long-awaited return of internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Borno State who had been living in Yobe for years has begun, with the first batch safely transported back to Maiduguri.

Authorities in Yobe State are prioritising the safety of women and children, who constitute the majority of the returnees. The exercise is being coordinated by the Security Adviser to Governor Mai Mala Buni, Gen. Dahiru Abdulsalam (rtd), in collaboration with the Director of Search and Rescue at the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and other security agencies.

As of Tuesday morning, IDPs from the Water Board facility and the Roundabout axis along the Maiduguri Road departed from Damaturu after expressing their eagerness to return home. The Yobe State Government provided free transportation and full security escorts throughout the journey to ensure their safety.

Officials reported that 1,295 individuals have so far been successfully moved to Maiduguri. The group is predominantly made up of women and children under the age of 14, underscoring the vulnerable nature of the displaced population.

Security personnel deployed along the route maintained a strong presence, helping to instil confidence among the travellers. Profiling of remaining IDPs is continuing. In Kasaisa village alone, 93 households totalling 547 individuals have already been registered.

Some of the returnees in Kasaisa expressed their joy, telling officials: “We are excited to return to our ancestral homes in Borno State.”The provision of free transport and robust security has significantly eased the burden on the displaced families. The initiative reflects ongoing efforts by the Yobe State Government to facilitate safe and dignified reintegration of the IDPs.

This development marks a positive step towards restoring normalcy for thousands who have endured years of displacement due to insecurity in the region.
