Civil society organisations have urged Nigeria’s security agencies to intensify efforts against terrorism while calling on citizens to play a more active role in safeguarding communities through credible intelligence sharing.
The appeal was made in Abuja by the United Against Terror Movement (UATM), which commended the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigerian Army, and other agencies for what it described as renewed professionalism in tackling insecurity.
Convener Okai Austin noted that while progress has been recorded, terrorism remains a major threat requiring sustained vigilance. He praised the DSS for adhering to due process in handling suspects, saying this approach has strengthened public confidence in democratic institutions.
Austin also highlighted the recent release and compensation of a wrongly arrested farmer in Kaduna as evidence of growing accountability, urging the military and police to adopt similar standards.
Despite these gains, he warned that terrorist groups continue to pose significant risks, stressing the need for stronger intelligence gathering and coordinated operations.
“Every attack on any Nigerian should be seen as an attack on the nation. Security is everyone’s responsibility,” Austin said.
Supporting the call, UATM member Okpanachi Jacob cautioned against sharing sensitive security information on social media, warning that leaks could compromise ongoing operations.
He further urged the Federal Government to strengthen oversight of funds allocated to states and local governments, arguing that prudent resource management would help address poverty and other drivers of insecurity.
The movement appealed to Nigerians to support the #UnitedAgainstTerror campaign by volunteering credible information directly to security agencies, emphasizing that collaboration between citizens and authorities is key to defeating violent extremism.
