Cross River NDC Executives Pass Vote of No Confidence on State Chairman

The Cross River State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) is facing a fresh internal crisis as key members of the State Executive Council (SEC) passed a vote of no confidence on the party’s State Chairman, Mr. Goddie Archibong Akpama (also referred to as Goddie Akpama).

In a communiqué issued after a meeting on Friday, senior executives accused Akpama of several infractions, including anti-party activities, financial irregularities, abuse of office, and autocratic leadership style.

A major point of contention is the allegation that Akpama continued to receive salaries from the Cross River State Government until May 2026, despite claiming to have resigned his appointment to lead the opposition party — an issue the executives described as a serious conflict of interest.

Other allegations include:Unilaterally altering the State Executive Council list after the state congress without proper consultation.

Imposing party structures and officials at ward and local government levels.

Failure to harmonise and publish authentic ward and LGA executive structures.

Mismanagement of delegates’ funds and party resources without transparency.

Constituting screening committees without constitutional authority.

Admitting individuals of questionable loyalty into the party.

Failing to convene State Executive Council meetings since the congress.

The communiqué was signed by the Deputy State Chairman, Sir Mark Ujor; State Publicity Secretary, Comrade Cletus Albert Amawu; State Women Leader, Lady Adim Henshaw; State Legal Adviser, Hon. Ebaye Akonjom Esq.; and State Financial Secretary, Ettan Aidam Mark.

The aggrieved executives appealed to the National Working Committee (NWC) of the NDC to set up an independent investigative panel into the allegations.

They also demanded the restoration of the original SEC structure in line with agreed zoning arrangements and verification of all executive members.

“The future of the Nigeria Democratic Congress in Cross River State must not be jeopardised by internal disputes, personal interests, or unconstitutional practices,” the statement read.

Reacting to the development, Akpama dismissed the vote as a politically motivated smear campaign aimed at weakening the opposition in the state.

He insisted that he formally resigned from government service on February 16, 2026, and provided documentary evidence, including a resignation letter and receipts showing he refunded any salaries paid in error after his resignation.

The crisis highlights deepening divisions within the young opposition party in Cross River State as it positions itself ahead of future elections.
