The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has charged Nigeria’s banking sector to intensify efforts in disrupting terrorism financing and other illicit financial flows undermining national security.
Speaking on Monday during a courtesy visit by United Bank for Africa (UBA) Group Managing Director, Oliver Alawuba, at Army Headquarters in Abuja, Shaibu described the financial sector as a vital partner in safeguarding national stability.
He urged Alawuba, who also chairs the Body of Bank CEOs, to mobilize the industry towards stronger financial surveillance and intelligence-sharing systems capable of detecting and halting suspicious transactions linked to terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and organized crime.
“Disrupting the financial lifelines of criminal networks remains a key component of Nigeria’s counter-terrorism and internal security strategy,” Shaibu emphasized.
The COAS also highlighted the Army’s commitment to improving personnel welfare as a foundation for operational effectiveness.
In response, Alawuba pledged UBA’s support through tailored financial solutions, including mortgage financing, infrastructure support, and welfare initiatives for military personnel.
He further assured assistance in facilitating efficient financial services for troops deployed on international peacekeeping missions.
