Borno Govt: 360 Abductees Freed by Military, Not Ransom

The Borno State government has dismissed claims that ransom was paid to secure the release of 360 abductees from the Mandara Mountains, insisting the rescue was achieved through a military operation.

Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Usman Tar, speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, said the operation was intelligence-led and supported by the Department of State Services (DSS).

“There was no ransom payment. It was a daring military operation with intelligence support from the DSS that led to the rescue of 360 citizens. That is the fact on the ground,” Tar stated, questioning the credibility of ransom allegations.

The rescue, carried out under Operation Hadin Kai, involved special forces and weeks of intelligence gathering. Victims, men, women, and children had been held in harsh conditions by Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS), a Boko Haram faction.

Tar noted that Boko Haram has shifted from an ideological movement to a criminal enterprise. “The insurgency has transmuted into a big business. The government sees them simply as criminals,” he said, vowing continued military action against the group.

The Mandara Mountains, long a hideout for armed groups, remain a focal point of counter-insurgency operations in the region.
