Fifty elderly residents of Magamin Diddi village in Maradun Local Government Area, Zamfara State, have been abducted after attempting to reconcile with bandits at their hideout.
Maradun council chairman, Bello Dosara, confirmed the incident, stating that the villagers met with the bandit kingpin, Jammo, without government approval.
He stressed that Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration does not support reconciliation with bandits.Dosara revealed that Jammo, who operates from Muntsira Forest, had previously blocked villagers’ access to the market, prompting the local government to provide weekly security escorts.
He added that 11 abductees have since been released, while 39 remain in captivity.
Councillor Bello Husseini explained that Jammo has clashed with Zamfara’s security outfit, Askarawa, in the past, leading to casualties on both sides.
He said the bandit leader requested reconciliation after losing fighters in recent military operations but betrayed the villagers by abducting them.
Jammo is now demanding ₦24 million in exchange for three seized rifles. Both Dosara and Husseini condemned the abduction, describing the bandits as untrustworthy and urging security agencies to launch a sustained offensive against the “Dajin Natsira” forest, which they say has never faced consistent military confrontation.
