Atiku’s Presidency will be Synonymous to Fulani Taking Power – Babachir Lawal

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has asserted that a presidency led by Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, would effectively represent a "Fulani presidency."

Lawal, who recently resigned from the ADC citing alleged irregularities in the party's primary election that favored Atiku, made the remarks in a Facebook post on Saturday.

He noted that his earlier criticism of Atiku, whom he referred to as “Kachalla” triggered widespread backlash from many in Nigeria’s Fulani community, including insults and threats.

Lawal drew a parallel to President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, stating: “Atiku’s presidency will be synonymous to a Fulani presidency even as Bola Tinubu’s presidency is synonymous to a Yoruba presidency and the Yorubas are proud of him no doubt.”

He defended his position, arguing that highlighting potential risks posed by an Atiku administration should not be misconstrued as an attack on the entire Fulani ethnic group.

“If pointing out the danger an Atiku’s presidency will pose to the country amounts to insulting the whole Fulani race, and if that is how the Fulani race chooses to see it, so be it. It is a free world,” Lawal said.

Lawal’s resignation and comments come amid ongoing tensions within the opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

His statements have sparked debate, with some viewing them as ethnically charged while others see them as political critique.

This development highlights deepening fractures in the ADC and broader opposition efforts to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next presidential race.
