Atiku Abubakar’s camp has fired back at ex-SGF Babachir Lawal, dismissing his claims that the ADC presidential primaries were rigged as “unsubstantiated” and lacking proof.
Lawal resigned from the ADC on Monday, alleging the primaries were manipulated in Atiku’s favour. He also called Atiku “Kachalla” and vowed to stop him from reaching the presidency.
In a statement by Atiku’s spokesman Phrank Shaibu, the camp said Lawal “insulted thousands of ADC members nationwide” but produced “no documents, no verifiable facts, no credible witnesses” to back his allegations.
Shaibu questioned Lawal’s consistency, noting he accepted the same primary process in Adamawa where his cousin Omar Suleiman won the ADC governorship ticket. “Was the process only credible when it favoured his family?” the statement asked.
The camp also accused Lawal of resorting to ethnic and religious sentiments after failing to persuade ADC members. It revived the “grass-cutting scandal” from his tenure as SGF under Buhari, saying Lawal’s anger was about losing, not electoral integrity.
“Democracy guarantees participation, not victory. One cannot celebrate democracy when it produces a preferred result and suddenly condemn it as rigged when it does not,” Shaibu said.
Atiku’s team insisted the 2027 election will be decided by Nigerians on issues, not “post-primary bitterness.”
