The Osun State All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Campaign Council has called for a thorough investigation into the death of Taliat Simbiat, who died during the Accord Party primary for the Ayedire/Iwo/Olaoluwa Federal Constituency held in Iwo.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Osogbo by the Head of the Media and Publicity Committee, Remi Omowaiye, the APC alleged that violence and destruction of property marred the Accord Party primaries across parts of the state.
Omowaiye described the incident as disturbing, noting that several Accord Party members and innocent citizens sustained injuries, while lives were reportedly lost due to the chaos that accompanied the exercise.
He specifically mentioned the death of Taliat Simbiat from Ward 3, Iwo, stating that she lost her life during the violence, with no fewer than 30 persons reportedly sustaining serious injuries in the local government.
The APC urged Governor Ademola Adeleke to fully cooperate with law enforcement agencies to identify, apprehend, and prosecute those responsible for the killing of Mrs Taliat Simbiat and the injuries inflicted on others.
“He must not play ostrich this time around. No individual, regardless of political affiliation or status, should be shielded from justice,” the statement added.
Reacting to the allegation, Governor Ademola Adeleke, in a statement signed by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased. He clarified that Taliat Simbiat slumped and died during the primaries in Iwo.
The governor described the deceased as a committed party faithful and one of his administration’s biggest promoters in Iwo and environs. He prayed for the repose of her soul and urged forbearance for her family.
Adeleke reiterated his intolerance for violence in political activities and commended Accord Party members for largely conducting themselves peacefully during the primaries.
He rejected claims that his government shields thugs, emphasising his consistent advocacy for peace and stability in the state.
The incident occurred as political activities intensify ahead of future elections in Osun State.
