APC Accuses Kwankwaso of Proxy Rule in Kano After Son's Nomination

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has accused former governor Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of attempting to govern the state by proxy following the nomination of his son, Mustapha Kwankwaso, as the deputy governorship candidate of the New Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 elections.

The NDC recently unveiled Mustapha Kwankwaso as running mate to its governorship candidate, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo. Mustapha, who previously served as Commissioner for Youth and Sports under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, resigned alongside three other commissioners after Yusuf defected to the APC.

Reacting to the development, Kano APC Chairman Umar Haruna Doguwa said the party was not surprised by Mustapha’s emergence, alleging it was part of Kwankwaso’s long-standing ambition to maintain political dominance in the state.

“APC is not surprised with the nomination of Kwankwaso’s son Mustapha as running mate to Aminu Abdussalam in their NDC party. In fact, APC expects more than this from Kwankwaso. We know he has tried all possible means to secure a third term in office,” Doguwa stated.

He further claimed that Kwankwaso had previously explored legal avenues to extend his tenure beyond constitutional limits, describing his son’s nomination as another attempt to advance that agenda.

“Imposing his biological son to run as deputy governor is an opportunity to hatch the plan. Given more opportunities, Kwankwaso will do more than that,” Doguwa added.

Despite the allegations, Doguwa insisted the APC remained confident ahead of the 2027 elections. Meanwhile, the Kwankwasiyya Movement has vowed to reclaim power in Kano, condemning Governor Yusuf’s defection to the APC, a move Kwankwaso himself labeled a betrayal.
