Senator Adams Oshiomhole has publicly alleged that the daughter of Senate President Godswill Akpabio obtained a high-profile position at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) without going through standard recruitment procedures or possessing the necessary merit.
Speaking on the Mic On Podcast hosted by Seun Okinbaloye, Oshiomhole defended his earlier strong criticism of the NNPC during a Senate probe into alleged financial irregularities spanning billions of naira.
He tied the nepotism claim to the broader controversy surrounding former NNPC Group CEO Mele Kyari.
“And now I know that the Senate President said his daughter was taken by Mele Kyari and put in a, well as Nigerians we say, in a juicy position that he probably didn’t merit,” Oshiomhole stated.
The Edo North senator suggested the appointment bypassed normal interviews and due process, accusing Akpabio of having a personal stake in the oil company.
He broadened the allegation, claiming nepotism is widespread at NNPC, with officials routinely placing relatives, children, uncles, cousins, and in-laws in top roles, effectively turning senior management into a “family business.”
Oshiomhole clarified that he has no issue with public officials’ relatives working at the NNPC, provided they are qualified and recruited transparently.
“You can only make an issue if you give them a job they did not merit, they are not qualified for, and you didn’t follow the right procedure,” he added.
The remarks come amid ongoing tensions in the Senate over a probe into NNPC’s finances from 2017–2023, including massive discrepancies in receivables and payables.
Oshiomhole had previously described the organization in harsh terms during committee hearings, prompting the Senate to distance itself from comments labeling it a “house of thieves.”
