ADC Youths Protest Deregistration Ruling, Demand Judge’s Removal

Hundreds of youths from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) took to the streets of Abuja on Tuesday, calling for the removal of Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court.

The protest followed Justice Lifu’s ruling ordering the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the ADC and four other political parties, a decision the youths described as “highly controversial” and a threat to Nigeria’s multiparty democracy.

Led by ADC National Youth Leader, Balarabe Rufai, the demonstrators marched from the party’s national secretariat in Wuse II to the Federal High Court in Maitama, chanting “Justice Lifu must go.”

They carried placards with inscriptions such as “Judiciary is not for sale,” “Save our democracy now,” and “No to one-party state.”

Rufai told journalists that the party had petitioned the National Judicial Council (NJC), accusing Justice Lifu of gross misconduct and disregarding a subsisting Court of Appeal order.

He warned that continued silence from the NJC could erode public confidence in the judiciary.

“We are here to call for urgent intervention. What we are experiencing now is judicial banditry, and it must stop,” Rufai said, adding that the ADC must be allowed to contest the 2027 general elections.

The protesters vowed to sustain their action until Justice Lifu is removed, insisting that attempts to weaken the opposition would not be tolerated.
