Accord Party Disowns Olawepo-Hashim Candidacy, Refunds ₦50m Nomination Fee

The national leadership of the Accord Party has officially disowned Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, declaring that the party did not conduct any presidential primary or produce a candidate for the race.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday by the party’s National Chairman, Maxwell Mgbuden, the Accord Party insisted that the widely publicised affirmation exercise that allegedly produced Olawepo-Hashim was not authorised by the national leadership and held no validity.

The clarification comes just days after Olawepo-Hashim’s media team announced his emergence as the party’s presidential candidate following supposed affirmation primaries held across several states.Mgbuden stated clearly:

“The purported presidential primary where he emerged as the ‘presidential candidate of Accord’ as widely reported in the national media was not conducted by our great party and has no effect whatsoever. It was a fanfare by his supporters, which should not be misconstrued as the party’s presidential primary. It was not.”

The party chairman explained that no valid presidential aspirant emerged within the timeframe stipulated in the party’s approved guidelines and timetable submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

As a result, the scheduled presidential primary was cancelled and INEC was duly notified.

According to the statement, Olawepo-Hashim only indicated interest in contesting the presidency via a letter dated May 26, 2026, after the deadline for submission and screening of aspirants had closed.

The party also disclosed that it received ₦50 million from Olawepo-Hashim after the nomination window had closed comprising ₦10 million for the expression of interest form and ₦40 million for the nomination form.

“In keeping with the Accord’s cherished principles of transparency, accountability, and due process, the party instructed its bankers to reverse the payments... to the originating bank,” the statement said.

The leadership stressed that compliance with nomination procedures is mandatory, regardless of whether other aspirants showed interest.

“For now, Accord has no presidential candidate for the 2027 general election. The party, however, nominated candidates for governorship and legislative offices,” Mgbuden concluded.
