Abia Assembly Summons Security Chiefs Over Rising Kidnappings

The Abia State House of Assembly has resolved to invite security chiefs in the state for a crucial meeting to address escalating insecurity, particularly the surge in kidnappings.

The decision was reached during Tuesday’s plenary session following a motion of urgent public importance raised by Deputy Speaker Augustine Okezie Mmeregini.

He cited the abduction of Mr. Dennis Okechi Izuchukwu and Mrs. Onyiyechi Ekechukwu at Umuawa, Alaocha community in Umuahia North LGA as evidence of worsening security breaches.

Mmeregini described the situation as an “insurgency of kidnapping and other vices” and urged the Abia State Homeland Security Agency and sister agencies to intensify efforts to safeguard lives and property.

He also called on the mayors of the 17 LGAs to reactivate community vigilante groups and encourage traditional rulers and community leaders to remain vigilant.

Presiding Speaker Emmanuel Emeruwa described the matter as critical, and the House unanimously supported the motion, resolving to interface directly with security chiefs to find lasting solutions.

The move shows growing concern over insecurity in Abia, where kidnappings and other crimes have unsettled communities and heightened calls for stronger grassroots security measures.
