2027: Donald Duke Blames Bad Leadership for Nigeria’s Insecurity

Former Cross River State Governor and Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) presidential candidate, Donald Duke, has attributed Nigeria’s escalating insecurity and the payment of approximately N2 trillion in ransoms to kidnappers in 2025 to years of failed and self-serving leadership.

Duke made the remarks on Wednesday in Abuja while accepting the PRP’s presidential nomination during the presentation of certificates of return and party flags to the party’s candidates for the 2027 general elections.

He painted a grim picture of the country’s security situation, stating that criminal elements now wield more influence than the government in some areas.

“Our land has become so desolate that bandits, gangsters and kidnappers collect taxes while the government collects excuses,” Duke said.

Citing figures from the National Bureau of Statistics, he noted that the N2 trillion paid as ransom to kidnappers in 2025 alone was equivalent to about 10 per cent of the entire federal budget.

The former governor blamed successive leaders for failing to do the right thing at the right time.

“All this is because our leaders have failed to do what is right when it was right and for whom it was right. At the end of the day, the best politics is, and always will be, doing the right thing not the expedient thing,” he added.

Duke pledged to prioritise security and the welfare of ordinary Nigerians if elected, promising a Nigeria where farmers can return safely from their fields and children have access to quality education.

He positioned the PRP as a party for the common man, vowing to champion the cause of ordinary citizens against political elites.

“The scavengers have had their turn. Now it is the turn of the common man, the true Nigerian… And I, Donald Duke, seek to be their champion,” he declared.

PRP National Chairman, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, described Duke as the party’s best choice to lead Nigeria’s revival, emphasising the candidates’ commitment to selfless service and turning the country around.
