Public affairs analyst, Summer Sambo has said there are strong indications that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, will select his running mate from the South-East region for the 2027 general elections.
Sambo made the remark during an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Monday while reacting to the recent presidential primaries held by various political parties.
According to Sambo, the South-East has traditionally served as Atiku’s political base in the southern part of the country. He noted that Atiku picked Peter Obi from the South-East as his running mate in 2019 and Ifeanyi Okowa from the South-South in 2023.
“The indicators around Atiku’s running mate suggest he’s likely to choose the South-East. The South-East has always been his political base in the South,” Sambo said. “His move to the South-East may be aimed at reducing Peter Obi’s influence in the region.”
Atiku Abubakar emerged as the ADC presidential candidate after defeating former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen at the party’s primary.
The development comes as political realignments and strategic calculations intensify ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
