The 11th National Assembly is poised to deliberate on a significant constitutional amendment that would replace the current two four-year terms for the President and state governors with a single six-year term.
Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, has announced plans to sponsor a bill in the incoming 11th Senate aimed at introducing a single six-year tenure for these executive positions.
The proposal seeks to address issues around incumbency advantages, reduce the frequency and costs of elections, and allow elected leaders more focused time to implement long-term policies without the distractions of re-election campaigns.
This development builds on ongoing discussions in Nigerian political circles. Similar proposals have previously been floated by figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar (who advocated for a rotational single six-year term) and Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, reflecting persistent debates about governance efficiency and political stability.
Proponents argue that a single, longer term could minimize divisive politicking, cut election-related expenses, and encourage better performance, as leaders would not need to prioritize re-election bids midway through their tenure.
Critics, however, often raise concerns about reduced accountability, as incumbents would face no electoral test after their initial victory.
The bill, if introduced and passed by both chambers of the National Assembly, would require approval by a two-thirds majority in the Senate and House of Representatives, followed by endorsement from at least 24 state Houses of Assembly before it can become law.
This move comes amid broader constitutional review efforts in the 11th Assembly, signaling potential major reforms to Nigeria’s democratic framework ahead of or following the 2027 general elections.
