Yobe APC Governorship Aspirants Reject Consensus Candidate, Demand Direct Primaries

Three prominent governorship aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Yobe State have rejected the emergence of Baba Malam Wali as the party's consensus candidate for the 2027 election, insisting on transparent direct primaries.

The aspirants, former Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mustapha Maihaja; former lawmaker Bashir Machina; and Kashim Musa Tumsah, argued that the consensus arrangement violated due process and the provisions of the Electoral Act and the APC constitution.

Speaking on behalf of the group, known as G-3, in Damaturu on Sunday, Tumsah said the consensus process was not properly handled and lacked genuine consultation among all interested parties.

“The issue of consensus has not been properly handled. Since the laid-down process was not followed, we believe the arrangement has failed,” Tumsah stated.

He emphasised the group's demand for direct primaries to allow party members to freely choose the candidate through voting.

The aspirants warned against any imposition of a candidate, vowing to challenge any outcome that fails to comply with electoral guidelines.

However, they pledged to support whoever emerges from a credible and transparent primary process.

Machina also urged APC members in the state to reject any attempt to handpick candidates without broad consultation, arguing that such candidates may not truly serve the interests of Yobe people.

The development highlights growing internal tensions within the APC in Yobe ahead of the 2027 polls, as some stakeholders push for a more democratic selection process.
