Why I Signed Obasa's Impeachment Notice - Desmond Elliot

Lagos State House of Assembly member, Honourable Desmond Elliot, has broken his silence on his role in the controversial impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, following accusations by Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila.

Elliot revealed that he signed the impeachment notice after returning from South Africa, where he had travelled for his wife’s sister’s wedding. He said he acted based on information that the move had the backing of the presidency.

“I was very shocked when I saw the video. During that period, I was in South Africa. I knew nothing about it at all. Only for me to come back, and what we heard at that period was that it came from the presidency,” Elliot stated.

The impeachment attempt occurred in January 2025 while Obasa was abroad. A majority of lawmakers, citing alleged misconduct and mismanagement, removed him and installed a new leadership.

The move triggered a crisis, including parallel sittings and court cases, before Obasa was eventually reinstated following President Bola Tinubu’s intervention.

Reacting to Gbajabiamila’s recent revelation that Elliot’s alleged involvement nearly cost him his job as Chief of Staff, Elliot described the former House of Representatives Speaker as his political mentor and “daddy.”

“I’m sorry, my daddy, if I have offended you in any way… He’s my egbon, and I grew up learning everything I know in politics through him,” Elliot said, while apologising for any perceived wrongdoing.

The Surulere 1 lawmaker maintained he was not the mastermind of the plot and expressed surprise at being singled out. He reaffirmed his commitment to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his constituency.

The episode highlights lingering tensions within Lagos APC ranks over the dramatic speakership crisis that shook the state assembly last year.
