UUTH vs EFCC: Health Unions Suspend Strike at UUTH After Akwa Ibom Govt Intervention

Health sector unions in Akwa Ibom State have called off their indefinite strike following the timely intervention of the state government in the UUTH-EFCC crisis.

The strike was triggered by the alleged assault and molestation of medical personnel, including Prof. Eyo Ekpe of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH), by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) during an operation at the hospital.

Worried by the strike’s impact on patients and healthcare delivery, Governor Pastor Umo Eno convened a stakeholders’ meeting on Friday, May 15, 2026, at the Governor’s Office in Uyo.

The meeting was chaired by Deputy Governor Senator Akon Eyakenyi. In attendance were representatives of the state government, EFCC, security agencies, UUTH management, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), JOHESU, NANNM, and other health unions. At the end of the meeting, stakeholders issued a communiqué condemning the incident as “unfortunate and entirely avoidable.”

The EFCC tendered an apology to the affected parties, including the Chief Medical Director of UUTH, Prof. Ememabasi Bassey, and the assault victim, Prof. Eyo Ekpe.

The commission promised a formal apology from its headquarters and assured that such incidents would not recur.

The meeting resolved that security agencies should exercise restraint and follow due process when dealing with healthcare institutions to prevent disruption of essential medical services.

It also stressed the need to protect patients, healthcare workers, and hospital sanctity at all times.Stakeholders further agreed that the government should identify and prosecute those behind the alleged fake medical report linked to the matter.

Following consultations with their members, all health sector unions agreed to immediately suspend the strike in the interest of public health and industrial harmony.

A liaison committee comprising representatives of the state government, UUTH management, EFCC, and health unions will be established to monitor the implementation of the resolutions and prevent future occurrences.
