At least two soldiers were killed while troops repelled an attack by ISWAP terrorists on the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Magumeri in Magumeri Local Government Area of Borno State.
The incident occurred on Thursday morning when the terrorists attempted to infiltrate the base under poor visibility, according to Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, Media Information Officer of Headquarters Joint Task Force (Operation Hadin Kai).
Though the attackers managed minor breaches in an isolated section of the base, troops fought gallantly and successfully repelled the assault, neutralising scores of the terrorists.
“Further exploitation of the general area revealed extensive blood trails, body drags and the recovery of terrorist corpses, confirming the heavy casualties inflicted on the attackers,” the statement said.
Troops also recovered a cache of arms and ammunition, including PKT automatic anti-aircraft guns, AK-47 rifles, and magazines.Regrettably, two soldiers lost their lives in the fierce battle.
An officer and other wounded personnel are in stable condition and receiving medical attention. Some equipment and temporary structures were also damaged by fire during the engagement.
The Nigerian military has intensified operations against ISWAP and other terrorist groups in the Northeast.
